Along the blue trail through the Lower Holes

Janošík's Holes - Map - Lower Holes Trail

Dolné diery is the introductory and most accessible part of the famous canyon system in Malá Fatra. If you're looking for an undemanding yet visually breathtaking hike full of wooden bridges, benches, and babbling waterfalls, you've just found the perfect tip for a trip. Dolné diery is the perfect compromise – it offers the true wilderness of Jánošík's Holes, but you can complete it without great effort and the adrenaline typical of the higher sections.

Dole diery are suitable for whom?

Footbridge over Dolné diery - Jánošíkove diery

This route is definitely ideal for families with children, casual tourists and seniors. Unlike the steep Upper Holes, you won't find any high iron ladders or chains here that require special fitness or overcoming a fear of heights.

The entire route is very well secured with wooden walkways, bridges and steps, allowing you to walk directly above the water of the Hlboký stream. Children love this route because it resembles an obstacle course and they don't get bored for a moment.

Where to begin and where to park?

The best and most logical starting point for visiting Dolné diery is the part of Terchová called White Stream.

The starting gate is located just behind Hotel Holom Diery. There is a large park-and-ride car park available here. An advantage of this starting point is also the complete infrastructure – before or after the hike, you can have an excellent lunch at Terchovská koliba Diery, or grab a quick refreshment at the Besiedka buffet, replenish your drinks, use the toilets, and buy souvenirs.

What awaits you along the way?

You enter Doľné diery after maintenance of the tourist trail. After just a few minutes of walking through the forest, the first limestone cliffs will open up before you, and you will enter a narrow canyon where the microclimate immediately cools.

Throughout the entire journey, you will follow the path of the Deep stream, which has carved fascinating rock formations here over millennia. Prepare for passage through narrow gorges (for example, the well-known section Islandand two beautiful waterfalls with heights of 1 and 3.5 metres.

The route through the Lower Holes ends on an idyllic mountain meadow Undergrowth. Here you will find traditional wooden chalets where you can refresh yourself during the summer season, relax in the meadow, and admire the views.

Time complexity and equipment

The walk from Biely Potok (from Hotel Diery) to Podžiar meadow will take you approximately at a normal leisurely pace 40 to 60 minutes. The elevation gain is only 150 metres, so the climb is very gentle and steady.

Despite it being an easy hike, Don't underestimate footwear. The gorges have high humidity all year round, and the wooden walkways and stones tend to be wet and slippery. We recommend sturdy hiking boots with good soles, not ordinary trainers.

Where to continue from Podžiar meadow?

When you arrive at Podžiar, you have three options for continuing:

  1. Return You can turn around and return to your car via the same route (through Dolné diery). Alternatively, you can choose to return via the yellow trail (towards Nové diery), which will create a nice loop and you won't have to backtrack. However, you will need to continue all the way to the Podrozsutec settlement, as the connection between Nové diery and Ostrvné is one-way.
  2. New holes: If you still have enough energy, head off to Nové diery (yellow marker). They are a bit steeper, but still manageable for children and offer more beautiful waterfalls. Following the yellow marker will take you to the beautiful settlement of Podrozsutec, and from there, through the forest, back to Hotel Diery.
  3. Upper holes This is a choice for more experienced hikers. If you turn off the Podžiar meadow onto the blue trail towards Horné diery, steep ascents, iron ladders await you, and finally the option to climb up to the Medziserosutce saddle or even Malý Rozsutec itself. If you don't have a problem with high ladders, the route isn't that difficult.

Whatever alternative you choose, Dolné diery is an experience you'll remember with a smile for a long time to come. We wish you a happy journey and good weather!
